The Ten-cent Prexie

Third class

The only possible third class postage on this empty box that would equal exactly ten cents would be for five ounces at four cents for the first two ounces plus two cents per ounce for the next three. This rate schedule did not come into being until January 7, 1963, lasting exactly five years. Ten cent Prexies had not been delivered since 1958.

The address tag on the box contains a zip code, which would not have been present prior to 1963, so the late use of the Prexie appears to be valid. Incidentally, I was able to buy mint precanceled Prexies at the philatelic window in Clayton, Saint Louis County, in the early 1970's.
