The Two-cent Prexie

Periodicals delivered at the post office of origin

Postage for delivery of a periodical weighing over two ounces that was mailed by the publisher and delivered by letter carriers at the post office of origin was two cents from June 8, 1872 until September 9, 1954. Notes in Beecher/Wawrukiewicz imply that stamps were not to be used for this purpose after July 1, 1898, but that is not correct.

The weight of this magazine precludes it from having been mailed at the second class transient rate or third class for two cents.
