International surface mail, two ounces

The international surface rate was five cents for the first ounce and three cents for the second ounce from October 1, 1907 until November 1, 1953.

This is a large envelope sent to Greenland from Northfield, Minnesota in 1939.

A commercial envelope sent to the Strait Settlements two days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was not delivered.

The surface rate for first class mail to Canada was four cents per ounce from August 1, 1958 until January 7, 1963.

This double weight cover was sent to Ontario after the four-cent rate came into effect in 1958.
